Have you ever had a desire and drive to achieve something, something so big that for it to happen will require detailed planning, saving and focus? It is your vision, that drives you to the on the goal that it becomes your passion!
Last year I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, it is the most amazing thing I have done to date. I spent years in planning, discussing and saving. Then it all came down to this on one week in September 2010.
The trip began on the 7th September. “It’s all about getting to the peak”, our head guide Batchi was telling us. “It is all about the focus.” Altitude sickness is overcome by how you direct your focus and what are the images you are holding in your mind. Each night Batchi would come and brief us on what we would be doing for the next day. Each night he would talk about the peak and the focus we had to have to ensure that we got there without sickness or fatigue.
To climb the Mountain, it was one step at a time. The evening of the Ascent was adrenalin packed we woke at 11.30pm and started to climb at 12 midnight. This climb had us climbing 1200 metres. It was steep, one step forward and it felt like two step backwards. Most of the climb was over sandy scree. As my foot slid back, I kept my eyes on what I had to do. Not looking to the top, it was about looking at your feet and the person in front. Batchi, set the pace and led us one step at a time not pushing the pace just pacing us and ensuring we kept a pace going that the slowest of the group could feel good in.
For me the wisdom I have been able to bring home from the Mountain is going to be part of my life and all that I do now. It was about having a Vision for completion and accomplishment. It was about the focus we were holding and the desire within to overcome and succeed.
There were three keys for conquering the Mountain.
- Goals – What are the steps necessary to take along the way?
- Passion – This is the desire and driver to power the vision and goals
- Values – What was important for me to experience on a regular and consistent basis to ensure I achieved my goals.
What are your goals for 2011?
What is driving you and causing you to focus your attention to succeed?
This year is the year for managing your time; it is time to have mastery over your time.
Now is the time to set your goals and strategies for success. Over the coming weeks and months we will be discussing managing your time and being the master of your schedules and projects.
To your success
